Sausage Roll or Tunnock's? The Definitive Corner Shop Recharge Rankings

There's a sacred ritual every British skater knows by heart. Session's dying, legs are jelly, the light's going, and someone mutters the immortal words: "right, shop?" What happens next — the scramble over what to buy with the sad coins at the bottom of your backpack — is as much a part of UK skate culture as coping on a flat rail. So we did the responsible thing and ranked the classics.

The Rules of the Juice Check

Three categories, zero mercy. Sugar hit — how fast does this thing get you back on the board? Messiness — will it end up on your grip tape, your mates' opinions of you, or both? Rollback speed — time from first bite to ollie attempt. A perfect score is rare. A perfect snack doesn't exist. We checked.

The Rankings

1. Tunnock's Teacake — 9/10. The thinking skater's choice. Marshmallow, biscuit, chocolate, all wrapped in that glorious shiny foil that screams "I have my life together." Minimal mess, instant sugar, zero chewing fatigue. Loses a point because the foil makes a noise that echoes through the whole shop.

2. Sausage Roll (Greggs, obviously) — 8/10. The heavyweight option. Proper salt, proper fat, proper recovery food. The only reason it's not number one is the rollback speed — nobody's kickflipping twenty minutes after a hot pastry. It's a session-ender, not a mid-session top-up.

3. Salt & Vinegar Crisps — 7/10. Fast, light, and the vinegar stings every split callus you've earned today. That's not a bug, it's character development. Docked points because one crisp will find its way inside your shoe.

4. Jaffa Cakes — 7/10. Technically three bites, legally a cake, practically a sugar rocket. The mess rating spikes if you've just done the "one Jaffa Cake in one go" challenge, which we do not officially endorse.

5. Lucozade — 6/10. The original sports drink, served in a bottle that's been roughly the same shape since 1987. Instant revival, but the sticky factor is legendary. If Lucozade touches your grip tape, your grip tape is now a Lucozade.

6. Percy Pigs — 5/10. Delicious, but a bag of Percy Pigs is a two-hour commitment disguised as a snack. By the time you finish the pack the session's over and everyone's gone home.

7. Scotch Egg — 4/10. A monster. A beautiful, terrible monster. Eat one at your peril and definitely not on a first session with new people.

8. Sports Mixes — 3/10. The vending machine roulette. Half the bag is lovely, the other half is the blackcurrant ones that taste like a pencil case. A gamble no skater asked for.

The Verdict

The teacake reigns supreme, the sausage roll sits on the throne as the recovery king, and everything else is fighting for scraps. But honestly? The rankings don't matter. What matters is the bench outside the shop, the foil packet getting passed around, and the debate about whether you've got one more run in you. That's the juice.
